L’espace du livre 2021

Carleton-sur-Mer

July 30 to September 4, 2021

Rencontres and Les PUI – Pratiques et Usages de l’Image (Nantes, France) are pleased to be presenting an exhibition devoted to the photobook as part of the 2nd edition of the project ”L’espace du livre” on the theme “The Publication as Objective.”

The exhibit brings together more than 25 books from Québec and the same number of books from France that consider publication as the intended result of an artistic approach. Choice of the Québec works was made by commissioner and art historian and critic Serge Allaire, while PUI selected the French books.

Presented at Atelier Alain le Bras in Nantes, France, in May 2021, “L’espace du livre” will also be staged at Maison de la culture Janine-Sutto in Montreal from September 9 to October 10, 2021.

COLLECTION

The “L’espace du livre” exhibition follows in the tradition of the exhibit The Photographic Book, presented each summer as part of Rencontres for the past six years.

The importance of the photographic book is already well established in major international fairs in Europe and the United States. For more than 20 years, a number of international publications and events have stressed its importance as both a form of expression and as creation in its own right in photographic practice. In taking a step in the same direction, Rencontres is seeking to ensure a visibility for the photobook, and to awaken the interest of the general public as well as that of collectors in the value of the book as a form of expression and as a collectible item.

In keeping with tradition, following the Photographic Book event, a number of works presented in the context of “L’espace du livre” will be offered to the Gabrielle-Bernard-Dubé library in Carleton-sur-Mer to enrich its collection.

These books will take their place with those in the collection built up over the past several years, a collection that brings together works by photographers taking part in recent editions of Rencontres along with a selection of publications by artists from Québec and elsewhere in Canada, as well as from publishers in other countries.
