Rencontres on Tour: August 15 to 18, 2019

Rencontres on Tour will run from August 15 to 18, 2019, in different sites, from Matapedia to L’Anse-au-Griffon. Free of charge and open to all, these public get-togethers around the subject of creation will bring together a number of participating artists, visitors and the local population for open-air screenings, discussions with the artists, guided exhibition tours and more.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 2019 | MATAPEDIA — NOUVELLE — CARLETON-SUR-MER

On Thursday, August 15 at 1:30 p.m. a tour of the exhibition Viva ’o rre by Carlo Rainone (Italy) will take place at the Deux-Rivières lookout in Matapedia as will a get-together with the artist around creation. This exhibit is presented in collaboration with the Photolux festival in Lucca, Italy, and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Montreal.

At 4:30 p.m. a tour of the exhibit The Peacemaker Returns by Skawennati (Montreal, QC) will be held at Miguasha National Park (former visitor centre), in Nouvelle.

At 8:00 p.m. there will be a tour of the exhibition Iran: Visual Poetries, stage 2 – Crossing time: between present and past at Parc des Horizons (municipal beach) in Carleton-sur-Mer, along with a get-together around creation with the curator, Claudia Polledri, and an Iranian artist (name to be confirmed). This exhibition is presented in collaboration with Silk Road Gallery,Tehran. At 8:30 p.m. the film Focus Iran – L’audace au premier plan (54 min.) will be screened outdoors in the presence of directors Nathalie Masduraud and Valérie Urréa; this will be followed by a discussion with the audience. In case of rain, the screening will take place at salle Charles-Dugas, in Carleton-sur-Mer.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 2019 | MARIA — CARLETON-SUR-MER

On Friday, August 16 at 10 a.m. a tour of the exhibit Partenza by Renata Poljak (Croatia), presented in collaboration with Occurrence – Espace d’art et d’essai contemporains, will be held at Parc du Vieux-Quai in Maria. This will be followed by a tour of the exhibition In the Reflection of the Rice Paddies (Maria) by Sophie Zénon (France), presented in collaboration with Diaphane – pôle photographique en Picardie, and a get-together around creation with the artist at Parc de Gesgapegiag (near the Lobster Hut).

At 2:00 p.m. the artists Vilma Samulionytė and Gytis Skudžinskas (Lithuania), co-founders of the publishing house NoRoutine Books, will do a presentation and host a discussion on the art book and on photobook publishing at Bibliothèque Gabrielle-Bernard-Dubé (Quai des arts) in Carleton-sur-Mer. At 4:30 p.m., the opening of the exhibition The Photographic Book 2019 will take place at the Vaste et Vague artist centre (again at Quai des arts) in the presence of the exhibit curator, Serge Allaire.

At 5:30 p.m. two exhibitions will open: aCCCumulation – Campeau – Carrière – Clément (40 Years of Photography), by Michel Campeau, Bertrand Carrière and Serge Clément (Montréal, QC), and Capital Camera Exchange inc. – Anonymous Amateur and Professional Photographers (2015-2018), by Michel Campeau, at Vaste et Vague artist center (Quai des arts), in the presence of the artists Michel Campeau and Serge Clément. This exhibition opening will be followed, at 8:00 p.m., by outdoor screenings at Parc des Horizons (municipal beach) in Carleton-sur-Mer. Excerpts from the documentary Gabor will enjoy a first showing in the presence of the director, Joannie Lafrenière, (Montreal, QC) and photographer Gabor Szilasi (Montreal, QC). Afterwards, artists from the 2019 programming will present some of their images and hold a discussion with the audience. Duos and get-togethers among artists will be featured, with cross-discussions involving Gabor Szilasi and Joannie Lafrenière (Montreal, QC); Charles-Frédérick Ouellet (Québec City, QC) and Christophe Goussard (France); and then Rachel Echenberg (Montreal, QC); and then Jacynthe Carrier (Québec City, QC).  In case of rain, the screenings will take place at salle Charles-Dugas, in Carleton-sur-Mer.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 2019 | NEW RICHMOND — BONAVENTURE — PASPÉBIAC

At 10:00 a.m. a tour of the exhibition Her Hands the Winds and a get-together around creation in the presence of Anne-Marie Proulx (Québec, QC), who did a residency in the Gaspé in 2018 and 2019, will be held at Taylor’s Point Park in New Richmond.

At 1:00 p.m. there will be a tour of the exhibition Iran: Visual Poetries, stage 1 – Traversing Tehran and its images with the curator, Claudia Polledri, and an Iranian artist (name to be confirmed) near the tourist information office in Bonaventure.

At 4:00 p.m. the work of Natacha Clitandre (Montreal, QC) carried out during her residency in the Gaspé in the spring of 2019 will be presented at Centre culturel de Paspébiac.

At 5:30 p.m. a tour of the exhibition My Big Family and a get-together around creation with the artist Hua Jin (Montréal, QC) will take place across from the Cantine du Chenail in Chandler.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 18, 2019 | PERCÉ — GASPÉ

On Sunday, August 18 at 10:00 a.m. a tour of the exhibition Immeasurable by Rachel Echenberg (Montreal, QC) will be held along with a get-together around creation in the presence of the artist at the Charles-Robin historical sector in Île-Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Percé National Park (near Rue du Quai) in Percé. That will be followed by a tour of the exhibition Iran: Visual Poetries, stage 3 – Committing, with curator Claudia Polledri and an Iranian artist (name to be confirmed).

At 2:00 p.m. a tour of Iran: Visual Poetries, stage 4 – Dissonances will be held at Haldimand beach in Gaspé, again in the presence of the curator and the artist. At 3:30 p.m. a tour of the exhibition Crowds and a get-together around creation will take place with Mélissa Pilon (Montreal, QC) at the Grande-Grave Heritage Site in Forillon National Park. Finally, at 4:30 p.m. a visit to the exhibition From One River to the Next will take place at Centre culturel Le Griffon in L’Anse-au-Griffon, with a get-together around creation in the presence of artists Christophe Goussard (France) and Charles-Frédérick Ouellet (Québec City, QC).

International partnerships

In terms of France, the Rencontres partnership with Diaphane, pôle photographique en Picardie has been renewed for two years. In addition, new agreements have been concluded with the City of Nantes and the Nantes organization Les PUI – Pratiques et Usages de l’Image with regard to holding public events in Nantes and in Québec City. On other fronts, Rencontres continues to collaborate with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Montreal, and a first collaboration is under way with the Photolux festival in Italy with the goal of creating a three-year partnership.

Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie is celebrating its 10th edition in 2019. An annual summertime event, it introduces the public to contemporary photographic creation, its language, its codes and its various esthetics through occupation of a particular region: the Gaspé Peninsula. There it presents a series of exhibitions and installations, public events conceived as a space for reflection and initiation, and a program of artist residencies and of exchanges with festivals in other countries.
