Maryse Goudreau Opens the Season of the Photography Encounters

From July 15 to September 30, 2026, Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie returns for its 17th edition on the theme WANDERINGS. Through 13 exhibitions presented across the Gaspé Peninsula, the festival invites audiences on a true artistic journey, featuring around 20 artists from Québec, Canada and abroad. From towns to national parks, spanning hundreds of kilometers, the works unfold along the landscape and through encounters.

Invitation to the opening

Launching this year’s program, the exhibition In the Eye of the Beluga by Gaspesian artist Maryse Goudreau will open early on July 2 at Musée Le Chafaud in Percé. A unique opportunity to experience, in preview, a sensitive and deeply rooted body of work.

Join us for an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m., where you will have the opportunity to meet the artist and the exhibition curator, and experience this poetic and thought-provoking body of work in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Over the past twelve years, Maryse Goudreau has dedicated a body of work to the beluga whale. Committed to following the species in its slow decline, the Gaspesian artist has created a series of photographic, sound, literary and sculptural works that cast an empathetic eye on this sentinel of climate change in the North.

In an exhibition dedicated to young audiences, she revisits this corpus with the eyes of a child, creating immersive works where birth and extinction coexist, drawing on her lifelong love of the animal to feel her way through a mixture of hope and mourning. Read more

Noémie Fortin is an independent curator and author based in the Eastern Townships. Attuned to practices rooted in ecofeminist thinking, she accompanies artistic, agricultural and community practices focused on caring for the living. Read more
