Exhibitions by Québec artists in France

In the framework of Rencontres’ international partnerships, three exhibits featuring the work of Québec photographers are being presented in France this fall.

Fragments & Trans, by Serge Clément (Montreal, Québec), is continuing until November 15, 2020, at the Institut pour la photographie in Lille. Serge Clément’s approach ranges from documentary to installation by way of social commentary, poetic narrative and photographic essay. The artist was hosted for a residency by Diaphane, Pôle photographique en Hauts-de-France in 2017 as part of a partnership with Rencontres, thanks to the support of the Fonds franco-québécois pour la coopération décentralisée. His exhibition, coproduced with Diaphane and with the kind collaboration of Galerie Le Réverbère in Lyon, is presented under the curatorship of Fred Boucher.

Foules (Crowds), by Mélissa Pilon (Montreal, Québec), will be presented from September 19, 2020, to January 3, 2021, during the Photaumnales at Le Quadrilatère in Beauvais. Collecting photographs of crowds from archival materials, Mélissa Pilon fragments them and assembles them in diptychs. The exhibit Foules was also mounted in Forillon National Park (in the Gaspé) in 2019 on the occasion of the 10th Rencontres. Photaumnales is produced under the general curatorship of Diaphane, Pôle photographique en Hauts-de-France.

The Nantes-based organization Les PUI – Pratiques et Usages de l’Image and Rencontres are partnering together to present L’espace du livre: Territoires – Édition – Photographies at L’Artothèque in La Roche-sur-Yon from September 25 to October 17, 2020. Built around 50 works of photography from France and Québec, this exhibition showcases production from our respective territories. The books were selected at the first edition of L’espace du livre, in 2019, by the members of Les PUI and by Québec curator Serge Allaire.
