Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie, in collaboration with Loto-Québec and the Musée d’art de Joliette, invites artists residing in Québec to submit an original photographic project exploring one or more current aspects of the Lanaudière territory, known as Nitaskinan by the Atikamekw nation. A single artistic proposal will be selected. The images produced through this photographic mission will form part of a larger, ongoing collection aimed at documenting the contemporary Québec landscape from original perspectives designed to provoke critical thought, reflection, surprise or wonder. The submission deadline is June 21, 2026.
CONTEXT
Launched in 2016, this province-wide photographic mission is an initiative of Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie. A distinctive feature of the project is the involvement of a local artistic partner in each region explored. The Musée d’art de Joliette — a leading institution in the Lanaudière region recognized for its commitment to contemporary visual arts — was approached as the regional partner for this edition.
Since its launch, the project has produced nine original photographic bodies of work linked to eight regions of Québec, all of which have been presented at the annual gathering of Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie.
PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS
The photographic mission is open exclusively to artists residing in Québec. It must be carried out in the Lanaudière region between the summer and fall of 2026. The resulting work will be presented publicly — first in Joliette at the Musée d’art de Joliette in winter 2027, and then at the 18th edition of Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie in summer 2027.
Proposals will be evaluated by a peer jury composed of artists and professionals from the Québec photography community. The relevance of the approach in relation to the chosen subject(s), as well as the quality of the visual portfolio, will be the determining factors. The curatorial role for the project at the Musée d’art de Joliette will be assumed by Maéli Leblanc-Carreau.
Artists wishing to submit a project must send in their application no later than June 21, 2026 at 11:59 PM (Québec time).
The application must include the following:
- A description of the proposed project within the framework of the Mission;
- An artistic statement of no more than 300 words;
- Ten images of your recent work that clearly reflect your project (Mac-compatible JPG files, RGB, 1024 × 768 pixels at 72 ppi);
- A curriculum vitae with your contact information.
The proposal may be submitted by one of the following methods:
- a compressed .zip folder;
- a shared Dropbox or Google Drive folder;
- via WeTransfer, to: info@photogaspesie.ca
The selected artist will be notified of the jury’s decision no later than July 31, 2026.
FINANCIAL TERMS
- The selected artist will receive an artist fee of $4,376, in accordance with the CARFAC 2027 fee schedule, for exhibition rights in Joliette and in Gaspésie;
- A lump sum for the production covering meal and accommodation expenses, as well as an allowance for travel costs, will be granted to the artist for the realization of the Mission in Lanaudière, for a total of $6,000;
- Any other costs related to the production of the exhibition in Joliette will be covered by the Musée d’art de Joliette;
- Production, transportation, accommodation, and meal expenses related to the presentation of the exhibition project in Gaspésie will be assumed by the Rencontres photographiques de la Gaspésie;
- The payment terms will be discussed with the artist at the time of signing the agreement.
