Rencontres de la photographie en Gasp\u00e9sie, in collaboration with Loto-Qu\u00e9bec<\/a><\/strong> and the Mus\u00e9e d’art de Joliette<\/a><\/strong>, is pleased to announce the selection of the artist who will carry out the next Photographic Mission in the Lanaudi\u00e8re region<\/strong>. Following a call for projects launched across Qu\u00e9bec, and from among some thirty applications, the jury has chosen the proposal by Lo\u00efc Chauvin<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2192 A Project Bridging Science, Image and Territory<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Titled Shoot<\/em>, the project revisits a 19th-century scientific device: the photographic gun<\/strong> invented in 1882 by \u00c9tienne-Jules Marey<\/strong>. The artist proposes to rebuild it and situate it within a contemporary context \u2014 that of waterfowl hunting<\/strong> in Lanaudi\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor this mission I will rebuild the photographic gun in order to go hunting for images of geese, ducks and brants,\u201d explains the artist. \u201cAt once sculptural, performative and photographic<\/strong>, this project explores, through an anachronistic shift, the enduring links between the capture of images and the capture of living beings. The results will bring together both the images produced by the device and those documenting its activation in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2192 A Visual and Symbolic Legacy<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In the fall of 1882, \u00c9tienne-Jules Marey developed a curious invention: a rifle capable of capturing motion<\/strong>. By aiming at a flock of birds in flight, he triggered a mechanism that recorded, on a rotating light-sensitive plate<\/strong>, a series of successive images. This process marked a key step in the history of motion decomposition and foreshadowed the emergence of cinema.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the technical innovation, the photographic gun embodies a tension that remains relevant today: that between observation and appropriation of reality. \u201cI am fascinated by the gap between the form of the object \u2014 a weapon \u2014 and the images it produces: fragile traces of birds in flight,\u201d adds Lo\u00efc Chauvin. \u201cThe English word shoot<\/em>, still used in photography, bears witness to this legacy in which the camera aims, fires, and captures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Photographic Mission will take place in the Lanaudi\u00e8re region between summer and fall 2026<\/strong>. The works resulting from this endeavor will be presented at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art de Joliette<\/strong> in 2027 (dates to come), and subsequently at the 18th edition of Rencontres de la photographie en Gasp\u00e9sie<\/strong> in 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based in Montreal, Lo\u00efc Chauvin holds a master\u2019s degree in Sculpture from Concordia University (2026). His practice stages simple devices that disrupt expectations: apologetic control machines, elusive birdhouses, and photographic materials concealed within the landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

By mobilizing plants, animals, sensors and protocols, he explores the relationships between humans and living beings, and questions the mechanisms of control. Inspired equally by the natural sciences, minimalism and surrealism<\/strong>, his works combine poetry, material constraints, humor, and strangeness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
