From July 15 to September 30, 2026<\/strong>, the Gasp\u00e9sie will become both a playground and a space for reflection for the 17th edition of Rencontres de la photographie en Gasp\u00e9sie, held on the theme WANDERINGS<\/strong>. This year, artistic director Claude Goulet brings together guest artists around the ephemeral, the fleeting, and the sensitive: a gesture, a light, a presence, a tension, a trace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival will present 13 exhibitions<\/strong> across 11 partner municipalities<\/strong>, towns, and national parks throughout the Gasp\u00e9 Peninsula. In total, 20 artists<\/strong> from Qu\u00e9bec, elsewhere in Canada and abroad will take part in this edition, which offers an open-air photographic journey featuring exhibitions, installations and public encounters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Haute-Gasp\u00e9sie RCM, the town of Marsoui will host Domyaku (The Veins of the Earth)<\/em><\/strong> by Japanese photographer Ayumi Hayashi<\/strong>,<\/a> presented outdoors at Alphonse-Couturier Park overlooking the river. In Mont-Louis, a partner of Rencontres for a second consecutive year, the public will discover There\u2019s No Calm After the Storm<\/em><\/strong> by Italian visual artist Matteo de Mayda<\/a><\/strong>, also presented outdoors, along the shoreline facing the Auberge L\u2019Amarr\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to partnerships developed with Japan, through the FOTOZOFIO festival<\/a> and the Japan Foundation, and with Italy, through the Italian Cultural Institute in Montreal<\/a>, Rencontres will welcome these two international artists during Rencontres on Tour in August. The public will have the opportunity to engage with them about their artistic practices and, in the case of Matteo de Mayda, his environmental commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the C\u00f4te-de-Gasp\u00e9 RCM, Quebec documentary photographer Renaud Philippe<\/a><\/strong> will present Retomada<\/em><\/strong> near the Maison Horatio-Le Boutillier in Gasp\u00e9. First shown at the artist-run centre Vaste et Vague during the International Journalism Festival in Carleton-sur-Mer, this project continues its circulation in Gasp\u00e9sie, gaining visibility as both a political and environmental work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Rocher-Perc\u00e9 RCM, Gaspesian artist Maryse Goudreau<\/a><\/strong> and curator No\u00e9mie Fortin<\/strong> will be featured at Mus\u00e9e Le Chafaud in Perc\u00e9 with In the Eye of the Beluga<\/em><\/strong>. This indoor exhibition will be accessible from July 2 to September 26. It is produced in partnership with Galerie Foreman<\/a>, Mus\u00e9e Le Chafaud<\/a>, the Vaste et Vague artist center<\/a> and Rencontres, with financial support from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Qu\u00e9bec and the Canada Council for the Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Chandler, the park in front of the Cantine du Chenal will host The Cloud Factory<\/em><\/strong> by documentary photographer and teacher Chris Donovan<\/a><\/strong>, originally from New Brunswick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Bonaventure RCM, Vessels for the Archipelagic Memory<\/em><\/strong>by Montreal-based artist Mallory Lowe Mpoka<\/a><\/strong> will be presented outdoors along the beach promenade in Pasp\u00e9biac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Avignon RCM, Maria will host (Un)Faces <\/em><\/strong>by Gaspesian photographer Jean-Christophe Liberge<\/a><\/strong>. Presented at Parc du Vieux-Quai, this exhibition stems from an artist residency carried out in the Avignon RCM as part of the Culture et Ruralit\u00e9 2024 call for projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three exhibitions will take place in Carleton-sur-Mer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series North End<\/em><\/strong> by French photographer G\u00e9raldine Lay<\/a><\/strong> will be presented at the Vaste et Vague artist center from July 25 to August 23, with the support of\u00a0the Consulate General of France<\/strong>\u00a0in Qu\u00e9bec City. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

STEADY RED LIGHT<\/em><\/strong> by French sound artist Ta\u00efssia Froidure<\/a><\/strong> will be presented in partnership with Diaphane, p\u00f4le photographique en Hauts-de-France at the Carleton lighthouse at Pointe Tracadigash. This immersive experience offers a different way to engage with the site\u2019s history through recorded stories from local residents. Created between September 2024 and August 2026 with the participation of Gaspesian citizens, the work reflects a sensitive and collective approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rencontres will also present Photo Books 2026: Stories in Images<\/em><\/strong>, a new exhibition dedicated to photobooks<\/a> created by the guest artists of this 17th edition, as well as carefully selected recent publications by Qu\u00e9bec artists. It will be on view from August 18 to September 11, 2026, at the Gabrielle-Bernard-Dub\u00e9 Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Nouvelle, the municipal rest area will host the outdoor exhibition Kiss Landing<\/em><\/strong> by Montreal-based photographer Fatine-Violette Sabiri<\/strong>,<\/a> recipient of the 2025 Lynne Cohen Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site in Pointe-\u00e0-la-Croix will host the exhibition Beyond the Thresholds<\/em><\/strong> by the Mexican collective Bats\u2019i Lab<\/a><\/strong>. Bringing together eight photographers \u2013 Jos\u00e9 \u00c1ngel Rodr\u00edguez, Magali Alanis Rodriguez Beaudoin, Isaac Guzm\u00e1n, Pablo Far\u00edas, Diego Moreno, Barry Norris, Marcey Jacobson (1911\u20132009), and Maruch S\u00e1ntiz G\u00f3mez<\/strong> \u2013 this project is presented in partnership with ESPACIO M\u00c9XICO Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the work of Clara Lacasse<\/a><\/strong> will be presented at Saint-Laurent Church in Matapedia with Scent Hound<\/em><\/strong>, a photographic project resulting from a 2025 photographic mission on the contemporary landscape of Bas-Saint-Laurent, in collaboration with Espaces F<\/a> in Matane and with support from Loto-Qu\u00e9bec.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rencontres on Tour<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n

Always a highlight of the event, Rencontres on Tour will take place from Thursday, August 20, to Saturday, August 22, 2026. Over three days, the public will be able to attend free screenings, guided tours and creative exchanges as part of a program designed for art and nature enthusiasts.
